Best Courses to Study With a C+ in KCSE

A C+ (7 points) is the minimum mean grade required for admission to a public university degree programme through KUCCPS. While it rules out highly competitive courses like medicine, engineering, and law, it opens the door to a wide range of degree programmes that lead to strong, well-paying careers. The key is knowing which courses are realistically within reach and how to maximise your cluster points.

Understanding Why C+ Is Enough

Many students and parents treat a C+ as a disappointment, but that perception is outdated. Several of Kenya's fastest-growing career fields -- information technology, digital marketing, journalism, social work, agricultural science -- are accessible at this grade. What matters far more than your mean grade is choosing the right course, committing to it, and building real skills during your degree.

Remember: KUCCPS admits based on cluster points, not just mean grade. You could have a C+ overall but strong grades in the specific subjects that matter for a particular course, giving you a genuine chance at admission.

Degree Programmes Available With a C+ Mean Grade

Here are 20 competitive courses that regularly admit students at or near the C+ cut-off at public universities:

Education Courses

| Course | Key Subjects | Career Path | |--------|-------------|-------------| | Bachelor of Education (Arts) | Strong in 2 teaching subjects | Secondary school teacher (TSC) | | Bachelor of Education (Science) | C+ in Maths, Biology, or Chemistry | Science teacher (high demand) | | Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) | C+ overall | ECDE teacher, school administrator |

Teaching remains one of the most stable careers in Kenya. TSC regularly hires, and science teachers are in particularly short supply. If you scored well in Biology or Mathematics, B.Ed Science is worth considering.

Business and Social Sciences

| Course | Key Subjects | Career Path | |--------|-------------|-------------| | Bachelor of Commerce | Maths C+, Business Studies | Accountant, auditor, banker | | Bachelor of Economics | Maths C+, English C+ | Economist, policy analyst, banking | | Journalism & Mass Communication | English B-, Kiswahili C+ | Reporter, editor, PR, media | | Social Work | Humanities subjects | NGO work, government, counselling | | Criminology & Security Studies | Humanities, English | Security sector, government agencies | | Community Development | Humanities | NGO, county government | | Public Administration | Humanities, English | Government, county administration |

Information Technology and Computer Science

| Course | Key Subjects | Career Path | |--------|-------------|-------------| | BSc Information Technology | Maths C+, Physics or Chemistry | Software developer, IT support, data | | BSc Computer Science | Maths B- recommended | Software engineering, cybersecurity | | Business Information Technology | Maths C+, Business Studies | IT consulting, systems admin |

IT is arguably the highest-return course available at C+ level. Starting salaries for software developers in Nairobi range from KES 50,000 to KES 120,000, and experienced developers earn significantly more. If you have solid Mathematics and Physics grades, this path has excellent prospects.

Agriculture and Environmental Sciences

| Course | Key Subjects | Career Path | |--------|-------------|-------------| | BSc Agriculture | Biology C+, Chemistry C+ | Agricultural officer, farm manager | | BSc Environmental Science | Biology, Geography | Environmental consultant, NEMA | | BSc Food Science & Technology | Chemistry, Biology | Food industry, quality assurance | | Agricultural Economics | Maths C+, Agriculture | Agribusiness, policy, extension |

Agriculture employs more Kenyans than any other sector. A degree in agricultural science or agribusiness is practical and opens doors to both government and private sector employment.

| Course | Key Subjects | Career Path | |--------|-------------|-------------| | Community Health | Biology C+, English C+ | Public health officer | | Health Records & Information | Biology, Maths | Hospital admin, data management | | Environmental Health | Biology, Chemistry | County health departments |

Other Options

| Course | Key Subjects | Career Path | |--------|-------------|-------------| | Library & Information Science | English, Humanities | Librarian, records manager | | Counselling Psychology | Humanities | Counsellor, HR, NGO | | Sports Science | Biology, PE | Coaching, sports management |

TVET Diploma Options

If your cluster points are not competitive enough for a degree, or if you prefer hands-on training, TVET institutions (formerly polytechnics) offer excellent diploma programmes:

  • Diploma in Information Technology -- offered at Kenya Polytechnic, Kisumu Polytechnic, and others
  • Diploma in Business Management -- widely available
  • Diploma in Journalism -- Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC)
  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine -- KMTC (requires B in Biology)
  • Diploma in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering -- for students with strong Maths and Physics

Many TVET diplomas lead to direct employment, and graduates can later upgrade to a degree through credit transfer.

Tips to Maximise Your KUCCPS Chances

  1. Check cluster requirements before selecting courses. Visit the KUCCPS portal and look up the cluster subjects for each programme you are interested in. A C+ student with an A in Biology has a strong cluster score for agriculture or education science courses.

  2. List courses strategically. KUCCPS allows you to list multiple choices. Put your most desired course first, but include realistic alternatives lower down.

  3. Consider less popular universities. The same B.Com programme at Masinde Muliro or Chuka University may have a lower cut-off than at UoN or KU. The degree is recognised equally by employers.

  4. Apply to both public and private universities. Some private universities offer scholarships or bursaries that make their fees competitive with self-sponsored public university programmes.

  5. Do not overlook inter-university transfers. Some students join a less competitive programme, perform well in first year, then transfer to a more competitive course within the same university.

If You Are Still in School: Raise Your Grade

If you have not yet sat KCSE, even moving from a C+ to a B- opens significantly more options. Focus your revision on subjects where you are closest to the next grade boundary. Practise consistently with topic-based questions to close gaps:
