About KCSE Geography

KCSE Geography blends physical (landforms, climate, hydrology) with human (population, agriculture, industry) and practical (statistics, fieldwork, photo interpretation) elements. It rewards candidates who can both memorise place-specific facts about Kenya, East Africa and the wider world AND apply general principles to unfamiliar scenarios. Strong Geography opens routes into urban planning, environmental science, tourism management and education. Use the topics below as a roadmap — start with the foundational physical-geography units before moving into the more interpretive economic and statistical work.

Paper structure

Geography is examined in two papers: Paper 1 (Physical Geography + Statistics — 100 marks) and Paper 2 (Human and Economic Geography — 100 marks). Each paper is 2.75 hours and uses both short and essay-length responses.

Top exam tips

  • Use real Kenyan/East African examples in every essay — generic answers get capped marks.
  • For statistical methods, always show the formula, then substitution, then answer with units.
  • On photograph interpretation, name visible features precisely — 'mountain' loses marks where 'a horst' would have scored.
  • Diagram-based questions reward neat, accurate sketches with labelled key features.
