About KCSE Christian Religious Education
KCSE Christian Religious Education spans Old Testament narratives, the life and teachings of Jesus, early Christian history, and the application of Christian ethics to contemporary African issues. It is a popular subject that opens pathways into theology, social work, education and counselling. Students often underestimate the analytical depth required — CRE questions reward candidates who can argue from biblical texts AND show how the principles apply to modern Kenyan life. The topics below are organised to build from foundational texts through to applied ethics.
Paper structure
CRE is examined in two papers: Paper 1 (biblical content — Old Testament + Life of Christ) and Paper 2 (Apostolic Church + applied Christian ethics in contemporary society). Each paper is 2.5 hours and worth 100 marks.
Top exam tips
- Quote scripture references precisely (book, chapter, verse) — vague references lose marks.
- Use real-life Kenyan examples when applying Christian ethics to modern issues.
- Structure long-answer responses with clear paragraphs: state the principle, explain it, give the example.
- Distinguish between what the Bible says, what the early Church practised, and what the modern Church teaches.
