How Many Subjects Are Compulsory in KCSE?

Every KCSE candidate in Kenya must sit 7 compulsory subjects. On top of these, students choose optional subjects to bring their total to a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 9 subjects. Your final mean grade is calculated from your best 7 subjects, but sitting more gives you a safety net if one paper does not go well.

The 7 Compulsory KCSE Subjects

These subjects are non-negotiable for every candidate sitting KCSE under the 8-4-4 curriculum:

| No. | Subject | Papers | |-----|---------|--------| | 1 | English | 3 (Functional Skills, Comprehension & Literature, Creative Writing) | | 2 | Kiswahili / KSL | 3 (Insha, Lugha, Fasihi) | | 3 | Mathematics | 2 (Paper 1 and Paper 2) | | 4 | One Science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) | 2-3 depending on subject | | 5 | One Humanities (History & Government, Geography, or CRE/IRE/HRE) | 2 | | 6 | A second Science or a Technical/Applied subject | Varies | | 7 | A group-based elective (see below) | Varies |

Note that while "one science" and "one humanities" are listed separately, the exact combination depends on your school's subject grouping.

How KCSE Subject Groups Work

KNEC organises KCSE subjects into five groups. You must pick subjects from at least three groups beyond the core three (English, Kiswahili, Mathematics):

  • Group I -- Sciences: Biology, Physics, Chemistry
  • Group II -- Humanities: History & Government, Geography, CRE, IRE, HRE
  • Group III -- Applied/Technical: Agriculture, Home Science, Art & Design, Woodwork, Metalwork, Building Construction, Power Mechanics, Electricity, Drawing & Design, Aviation Technology, Computer Studies
  • Group IV -- Languages: French, German, Arabic, Music, Business Studies
  • Group V -- Creative & Technical: Any subject from Group III or IV not already chosen

Most students end up sitting 8 subjects. High-performing schools sometimes register students for 9 to maximise cluster point combinations for university placement.

How Many Subjects Count Toward Your Mean Grade?

Your KCSE mean grade is calculated from your best 7 subjects. The three compulsory core subjects (English, Kiswahili, Mathematics) always count, plus your best 4 from the remaining subjects you sat.

This means if you sit 8 or 9 subjects, KNEC automatically drops your weakest result(s) when computing the mean grade. That is a significant advantage -- it gives you room to take a risk on a subject you find challenging without it dragging down your overall grade.

What About the CBC Transition?

The 8-4-4 system is being phased out as Kenya transitions to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Under CBC, the senior secondary structure (Grades 11 and 12) will look quite different:

  • Students will choose 3 subjects from a pathway (STEM, Arts & Sports, Social Sciences, or Technical & Engineering) plus core subjects
  • Assessment will include school-based continuous assessment alongside a national exam
  • The first CBC cohort is expected to sit their senior school national assessment around 2028-2029

For now, if you are in Form 3 or Form 4 in 2026, you are still under the 8-4-4 system and the KCSE structure described above applies fully.

Quick Tips for Choosing Your Optional Subjects

  • Think about university courses early. If you want to study medicine, you need Biology, Chemistry, and either Mathematics or Physics. Check KUCCPS cluster subject requirements for your target course before locking in options.
  • Play to your strengths. Since only your best 7 count, pick optionals where you can realistically score a B+ or above.
  • Consider career pathways. Subjects like Business Studies, Agriculture, and Computer Studies open specific diploma and degree paths at TVET institutions and universities.
